Several houses, business areas destroyed by windstorm in Nasarawa

Many residential buildings and business places have been destroyed by a tragic windstorm that wreaked havoc on some Lafia communities.

Narrating their ordeals, some residents of Lafia town, the Nasarawa State capital, said the windstorm tragedy caused massive damage on their livelihoods particularly their places of shelter.

One of the persons affected, Muhammad Iliyasu Garba, a journalist with BreezeFM, a Lafia-based private radio station, said the windstorm blew off the roofing of his residence completely as he has been rendered homeless, calling for support from concerned authorities and philanthropists.

Garba said he was devastated with the incident as his new roofs have been blown off, thanking God for his mercy.

A psychologically disturbed Garba told Nasarawa Newsline that he had just recently covered his newly built house, however, was not surprised to see the destruction caused, noting it was a real tragedy on him.

Also at the Isa Mustapha Agwai l Polytechnic Lafia, several buildings of the institution were badly affected.

Mukhtar Wakeel, Director of Public Relations and Protocol of the institution, in a statement made available to Nasarawa Newsline, added that at least five buildings had been badly affected by windstorm including the Administrative Block of the institution following the heavy rain that triggered the situation earlier on Thursday.

Other buildings affected by the disaster are the Schools of Environmental, Architectural Technology, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, hostels, electric poles, library annex among others.

Inspecting the destruction caused, the Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Doctor Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata said the incident had wrecked great havoc on the institution’s facilities, adding that necessary action would be taken to contain future recurrence.

Doctor Maifata said the management was working round the clock to work out modalities in order to find lasting solution to the windstorm tragedy.

Accompanied by his management staff including deans and directors of the institution, the Acting Rector  expressed readiness to address the damage caused swiftly in order not to stall academic and administrative activities in the Polytechnic.
