Nasarawa State Governor Engineer Abdullahi Sule has cleared air on the contentious #Tax_Reform_Bill and the newly approved 70, 500 new minimum wage for workers in Nasarawa State.

The Governor made the clarification when he appeared on the Arise TV Programme, “The Prime Time” on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

Fielding question on the new minimum wage, Governor Abdullahi Sule reaffirmed that the Nasarawa State Government has already approved 70,500 as the new wage for workers in the State.

He however revealed that the bone of contention is on the consequential adjustment where he cited an example of a worker who collects 30,000 as monthly salary and to make it to the new wage, 40, 500 would be added to one’s salary but the organised labour is demanding an addition of the 70,500 to workers already salaries.

“The challenge we are having with Labour in Nasarawa State is not the Minimum Wage per say but what they called, “Consequential Adjustment”. They’re referring to other people who at least were earning more than 70,000, how much you give as an increment. For instance, somebody that was earning 30,000 as minimum wage, and now will be collecting 70,500, that is an increase of 40,500. So, some of the people that probably are earning far more than that, they’re also expecting that kind of percentage. That’s over 100 percent. So, for somebody earning 800, 000 is expecting that we pay him another 800,000 and that’s where we say Nasarawa State does not have that kind of resources”, the governor explained.

The governor said that the State does not have such money to take the burden of such payment of salaries, expressing optimism that the issue would soon be resolved.
